(Starr)
On the plane ride to Virginia, Starr and Roy had a long discussion about why Karen did what she did.
âItâs an addiction,â Roy said. âShe once told me it was like the rush she gets as a lawyer when she wins a case. Whenever she has a genuine readinâ, she says itâs like a gift from the Great Beyond. Like an energy boost she canât describe. But even when she faked it? Like with fancy guesswork? It still gave her some kind oâ high.â
âYou mean, she doesnât feel the least bit guilty about it?â Starr asked.
âSheâs a lawyer, so she justifies it by sayinâ she gives âem closure. That it was somethinâ they needed to get on with their lives.â He clucked his tongue with a shake of his head. âSheâd be dupinâ people, makinâ âem cry and pray to God and heaven and all thatâjust because oâ messages she made up outta jack shit. And sheâd be gettinâ a high out of it. Can you believe that?â
âI can, actually,â Starr said. âNot that I condone it. Iâm just saying I understand why she would think she was doing the right thing.â Finding out that your dearly departed was still around and that they knew they were still loved and held dear was such precious, precious knowledge. âI canât wait to see the look in Chessâs eyes when we tell her that Francoâs still here with a message for her. Oh, I really do hope I get to connect.â
âYeah, so do I,â Roy said. âAnd for Jacksonâs sake, so does everybody else.â
Getting Chess to agree to see them had been easy. When Starr had called to ask if she and Roy could come over, all she did was ask if she remembered Bram Morrison. Chess immediately recognized the name. So when Starr said they had something of Francoâs that Bram wanted her to have, she agreed to see them.
That was why Starr could forgive Karen and her tales so people could reconnect with someone they believed theyâd lost to the other side. Because there was a chance it could lead to something valuable. Starr was about to weave an entire story about Franco for his widow. And it was going to revolve around a pen that actually had been gifted to Bram. But unlike how Karen had spun webs of fantasy for some of her clients, Starr intended to keep her tale as truthful as possible.
