(Starr)

On the plane ride to Virginia, Starr and Roy had a long discussion about why Karen did what she did.

“It’s an addiction,” Roy said. “She once told me it was like the rush she gets as a lawyer when she wins a case. Whenever she has a genuine readin’, she says it’s like a gift from the Great Beyond. Like an energy boost she can’t describe. But even when she faked it? Like with fancy guesswork? It still gave her some kind o’ high.”

“You mean, she doesn’t feel the least bit guilty about it?” Starr asked.

“She’s a lawyer, so she justifies it by sayin’ she gives ‘em closure. That it was somethin’ they needed to get on with their lives.” He clucked his tongue with a shake of his head. “She’d be dupin’ people, makin’ ‘em cry and pray to God and heaven and all that—just because o’ messages she made up outta jack shit. And she’d be gettin’ a high out of it. Can you believe that?”

“I can, actually,” Starr said. “Not that I condone it. I’m just saying I understand why she would think she was doing the right thing.” Finding out that your dearly departed was still around and that they knew they were still loved and held dear was such precious, precious knowledge. “I can’t wait to see the look in Chess’s eyes when we tell her that Franco’s still here with a message for her. Oh, I really do hope I get to connect.”

“Yeah, so do I,” Roy said. “And for Jackson’s sake, so does everybody else.”

Getting Chess to agree to see them had been easy. When Starr had called to ask if she and Roy could come over, all she did was ask if she remembered Bram Morrison. Chess immediately recognized the name. So when Starr said they had something of Franco’s that Bram wanted her to have, she agreed to see them.

That was why Starr could forgive Karen and her tales so people could reconnect with someone they believed they’d lost to the other side. Because there was a chance it could lead to something valuable. Starr was about to weave an entire story about Franco for his widow. And it was going to revolve around a pen that actually had been gifted to Bram. But unlike how Karen had spun webs of fantasy for some of her clients, Starr intended to keep her tale as truthful as possible.
